Planning a holiday to Africa often starts with a dream: warm turquoise waters, wide-open savannahs, wildlife encounters straight out of a documentary, and culture so rich you’ll talk about it for years.

To help travelers make sense of the many options, we sat down with Lauren, one of our brilliant Travel Planners and Product Managers at Explorer Safari. She’s the expert behind many of our most-loved East Africa safari tours and Zanzibar travel packages, and she knows exactly how to pair bush and beach for the perfect holiday.

Whether you’re dreaming of Zanzibar’s palm-fringed shores or the legendary plains of the Serengeti, Lauren breaks down everything you need to know.

1. What Are the Top Must-Do Experiences in Zanzibar?

“Zanzibar is one of those places where every day feels like a postcard,” Lauren says. “There’s history, colour, spice, and the warmest hospitality.”

Her must-do highlights include:

  • Exploring Stone Town: Lose yourself in winding alleys, buzzing bazaars, rooftop cafés, and architecture shaped by Swahili, Arabian, Persian, and European influences. It’s no surprise this atmospheric district is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • Relaxing on Nungwi and Kendwa Beaches: Think soft white sand, calm waters, and sunsets that look Photoshopped.
  • Spice Tour: Wander through vibrant plantations and discover why Zanzibar is the “Spice Island” – you’ll never look at cinnamon or cloves the same way again.
  • Dolphin Tour & Snorkeling at Mnemba Atoll: This lagoon is a slice of underwater paradise, home to turtles, colorful reefs, and an incredible variety of marine life.
  • Prison Island Visit: Meet giant Aldabra tortoises and learn about the island’s layered history, including its role in the slave trade.

“These experiences turn a simple Zanzibar trip into something unforgettable,” Lauren adds.

2. What’s the Best Safari Destination to Pair with Zanzibar – Serengeti or Masai Mara?

Lauren has a clear favorite – at least from a logistics perspective.

“If you want the smoothest transition from beach to bush or vice versa, the Serengeti is your best match,” she explains.

Here’s why:

  • Easy Access from Zanzibar, especially via Arusha.
  • The Great Migration, one of the world’s most spectacular wildlife events, spends much of the year in the Serengeti
  • One Country, One Itinerary: Tanzania keeps travel simple with fewer border crossings and visa considerations.
  • “That said,” Lauren adds, “if you’re already exploring Kenya or are excited about its culture, the Masai Mara is phenomenal. Just expect slightly more travel time.”

Either way, both destinations form the perfect land-and-sea combo with our Zanzibar safari packages and East Africa travel packages.

3. What’s the Best Time of Year to Visit Zanzibar and Go on Safari?

According to Lauren, timing is everything.

“June to October is perfection,” she says. “It’s dry season – so Zanzibar’s skies are blue, humidity is low, and the safari action is at its peak.”

Key reasons to travel during this period:

  • Zanzibar: Calm seas, perfect swimming conditions, and ideal weather for beach days.
  • Safari: Wildlife gathers around water sources, making game viewing exceptional.
  • Bonus: From July to September, you may experience the dramatic river crossings of the Great Migration in either the Serengeti or Masai Mara.

Lauren’s one caution? “Avoid April and May. It’s the long rainy season, and everything gets a little too soggy for comfort.”

4. How Can I Seamlessly Combine Zanzibar and a Safari in One Trip?

“It’s much easier than most travelers expect,” Lauren notes.

Her top tips:

  • Start with safari. You’ll be up early, driving dusty roads, tracking wildlife… and loving every minute of it. But it’s active – and you’ll appreciate some beach downtime afterward.
  • Fly into Arusha (Tanzania) or Nairobi (Kenya) to kick off your safari.
  • From there, hop on a flight directly to Zanzibar. “Several Serengeti airstrips, including Seronera, connect easily,” she says.

Lauren recommends looking at Zanzibar all-inclusive packages for the beach part of your stay – “they’re great value and make planning so much easier.”

5. Who Is the Ideal Traveler for a Zanzibar and Safari Holiday?

“This combo suits more people than you’d think,” Lauren smiles.

Perfect for:

  • Honeymooners: Sunset dhow cruises, private dinners on the beach, and morning lion sightings? Romantic perfection.
  • Families with older kids: Wildlife, snorkeling, culture, and adventure all in one itinerary.
  • Photographers: Big cats one day, brilliant blue ocean the next.
  • Bucket-list travelers: You get culture, nature, history, and relaxation in one seamless holiday.

It’s one of the most exciting and rewarding ways to experience Africa.

6. What Should I Pack for a Trip That Includes Both Zanzibar’s Beaches and a Safari?

Lauren says packing for a Zanzibar vacation plus a safari is all about versatility.

“Think lightweight, neutral, and comfortable,” she explains.

Here’s her go-to packing list:

For Safari:

  • Neutral-colored clothing (beige, olive, khaki) to blend into the environment.
  • Light layers for early morning and evening drives
  • A warm fleece for chilly dawn safaris
  • Comfortable closed shoes
  • A sun hat, sunglasses, and high-SPF sunscreen
  • Binoculars and a camera with extra memory cards
  • A small daypack for game drives

For Zanzibar:

  • Swimwear (pack more than one!)
  • Light, breathable clothing for warm island days
  • A pair of sandals and comfortable walking shoes
  • A sarong or light cover-up
  • Reef-safe sunscreen
  • A waterproof phone bag for dhow cruises and snorkeling trips

Bonus items? “A reusable water bottle, insect repellent, and a lightweight rain jacket. Even in paradise, a quick shower can surprise you.”

7. How Long Should My Safari Be to Complement a Zanzibar Holiday Without Feeling Rushed?

Lauren suggests a balanced approach:

  • 4–6 days on safari
  • 2–3 nights in the Serengeti or Masai Mara
  • Optional add-ons: Ngorongoro Crater or Lake Manyara (Tanzania), or Amboseli (Kenya)
  • Then spend 4–5 nights in Zanzibar to relax, snorkel, and soak in the sun.

“In total, you’re looking at a 10–12-day holiday,” Lauren says. “Long enough to get incredible wildlife sightings and still spend days relaxing on the beach.”
